My Favorite Thrifting Find, Ever

These two chairs are my most favorite garage sale find ever.  I found them in a swanky neighborhood on Indy's north side a while back.  I almost didn't stop at the sale because it seems like the fancier the house the worse the garage sale.  Anyone else ever notice that?

I saw the chairs right away, but thought the price tag said $50 - it didn't.  It said $5.  As soon as I had the price cleared up, I claimed them as mine.  The owner told me that they are from the law library at University of Michigan.  Being a Michigander myself, I knew the chairs had been waiting for me.

This picture is a little old, but I still have the same mish-mash of non-matching chairs.  We've changed out the table to a dark pine table with a pedestal.  I'd really like to paint everything this summer, but I don't know that I really have time for that.  I guess it'll depend on Xavier and if he goes back to being a baby that sleeps...  We've have a sleepless couple of months lately.  So, stay tuned.  If I get around to painting everything, I post photos!  What color should I paint?  I'm thinking white or cream table and maybe a contrasting color for the chairs?

We're going to be holding our own garage sale this coming weekend.  i'm considering sell my china cabinet back there because the tiny dining area is pretty crowded with the little boys and all...  Should I hold on to it?  Should paint that too?  Maybe turquoise? Maybe red?

I'm linking up with Simple Design's "Share your Thrift Haul."  These ladies are be my new favorite blog obsession.

  2. Wow! Great find. I agree that usually the more upscale homes tend to have slim pickins and prices too high...but you NEVER know, so good for you for stopping. Those chairs are amazing.

Do not get rid of that china cabinet!! I have not seen many with that retro style. Give it a coat of paint, or think of another room to use it in, but don't get rid of it, you'll likely regret it. I am a ruthless about decluttering when it comes to most things, but I think long and hard before I get rid of a piece of good furniture. Especially older pieces that are solidly constructed, because that is so hard to come by in newer manufactured items. Hold on to it!

  3. I agree that those chairs are the best! I have been envious of them ever since you had them! I agree with Allison, consider painting the china cab maybe the same funky color as the chairs. You could get together with friends and have a re-arranging party (while the kids are gone!) and see what new ways you can come up with to use what ya got!
